5th ANNUAL NEW PLAYWRIGHTS, NEW PLAYS COMPETITION
& $1000 KAPLAN PRIZE
The New Playwrights, New Plays Competition encourages and stimulates the writing and production of new full-length plays by Cape and Island writers. The Competition is sponsored by Eventide Arts, a Cape Cod non-profit organization devoted to producing stimulating theatre for the purpose of inspiring thought and debate, and showcasing the work of local artists.
The Competition is open to full-length plays written by both
new and
experienced playwrights who live on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard or
Nantucket. One play will be selected by the judges and presented as a
staged reading in June 2011 on the historic Gertrude Lawrence stage as
part of Eventide Arts’ 2010-2011 season of plays, concerts and
workshops. The winning Competition entry will be awarded the $1,000
Kaplan Foundation Prize.

Works-in-progress and completed plays must first be submitted to the Competition by the October 15, 2010 deadline to be included in the Competition. Plays will be accepted either as an email attachment or by US Mail. Electronic submission is preferred.
The second and final deadline for submission of completed plays is March 15, 2011. Plays will be accepted either as an email attachment or by US Mail. Electronic submission is preferred.
There will be a workshop period in April 2011 where the playwright will have an opportunity to hear his/her winning play read by actors with discussion, and make any final edits, if needed. During the Competition, all playwrights will receive written evaluations of their first draft from a noted artistic director by January 1, 2011. In addition, distinguished playwright Sinan Unel will be available for private consultations (for a fee) if the playwright so chooses.
Beginning in January 2011, playwrights may choose to have their plays cold-read after which they will have one last opportunity to edit. Playwrights are encouraged to invite the public, their friends, and families to the reading. Please see Guidelines. Final versions of edited plays must be postmarked by March 15, 2011. The New Playwrights, New Plays Competition winners will be announced in late April 2011.
